Last night I saw a shooting star in the black sky, a sure sign that fall and it's crisp, clear air is here. According to Samhain, these days mark the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year. But the term 'dark' is relative. To me, this is the time of year to settle down, to make pots of soup, to keep the fire in the stove stoked. We make plans for the holidays to visit with family + friends. We gather evergreen boughs and bring them indoors for decoration, adorning our homes with the scents and colors of the natural, green world. And the lights! A warm October day with Thomas and friends in-between the rows of Cortlands, Macs, Fujis. Their red sweetness fills the air, humming in our ears like the bees that buzz around our heads. Us and the bees - we are all drunk on that sweetness. I close my eyes to keep this memory safe, right arm heavy from holding the treasure of apples, left hand free to reach out and grab more. So I baked with them. And made this applesauce. What are you making with your apples?
This hand crafted Turmeric Honey is made from certified organic turmeric from Old Friends Farm in Amherst, MA. Use it for making salad dressings, pour it on ice cream, into mixed drinks (makes a fantastic hot toddy), or with seltzer for a home made turmeric-ale. I plan on drizzling it into homemade applesauce and baking it into an apple tart this week. Recipes to follow. Try it! Use code HONEY at checkout to save $5 off a bottle until 10/31. Tried it? Quick and easy to make, this is a dessert winner adapted from one of my favorite recipe sites, Food52. The flavors can be adjusted to suit your sweet tooth: use vanilla extract instead of almond and swap out the sliced almonds for walnuts. Try it with sweet, tart beach plum jam. The beach plum is a coveted stone fruit found on Cape Cod. It is typically harvested by foraging wild, secret spots along the beaches and bays. Looking for more sweet things?
