In this hands-on workshop, learn the basics of natural dyeing to design your own fabric gift wrap + ribbon for the holidays. Using the Japanese shibori technique, Itajime - where pieces of wood are used as a resist - we'll create snowflake-like patterns on fabric with natural, plant-based color. You'll also dye silk ribbons to coordinate with your wrap. Learn some Furoshiki - Japanese folding techniques - for wrapping gifts with fabric.
We'll discuss the basics of natural dyeing: plants from the garden that can be used, setting up a dye bath, how to shift its color using modifiers, and more. Learn how to prepare fabric with a mordant, ensuring proper colorfastness for your dyed goods.
Leave with your dyed fabric square, sewn by local artist Marie Weber of Emerald Acre, silk ribbons and fabric samples. You'll also go home with a booklet with detailed instructions for creating natural dyes at home. Enjoy tea + snacks, as well as a 15% discount in the shop; natural dyeing books, supplies, and ingredients are available for purchase.
